Interview with Professor Rob Herbert 1

Professor Herbert’s research examines the mechanisms of contracture in human muscles using novel biomechanical methods. He also conducts epidemiological studies to quantify the prevalence and incidence of contracture, predict people who are most likely to develop contracture, and we conduct clinical trials to investigate the effectiveness of interventions designed to prevent and treat contracture.

Professor Rob Herbert is a chief investigator of the Motor Impairment Program, a five-year (2014-2018) NHMRC-funded grant. He is also a founding Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy that produces the PEDro database (pedro.org.au), Chair of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Physiotherapy, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

I really like Rob’s point about being able to take the time to tackle the big questions. I have often wonder about the trade off between research quantity and research quality. Would various fields be further ahead if researcher could take the time to focus on the big questions rather than feel pressured to publish several papers per years?

    All around an interesting interview.
